Book Review : The Rules of Victory by James Gimian and Barry Boyce

Subtitled "How to Transform Chaos and Conflict", and further subtitled "Strategies from The Art of War". Which one of these attracts you to the book most? We could derive some sort of psychoanalytical analysis from that choice, or we could just class it as clever marketing - targeting the management book crowd, the self-help crowd and the Sun Tzu crowd.

For those in the Sun Tzu crowd the cover has the Denma translation logo emblazoned, the translation that I consider my favourite (primarily because of its consistency of word usage.

I have studied Sun Tzu on and off for the last 20 years and I found a lot to enjoy in this book. I enjoyed the way that the authors build up a model of interpretation that should help the reader apply the writings of the Art of War to their own lives and careers.

I enjoyed the focus on 'conflict' rather than warfare as that opens up a huge range of interpretation.

I did not enjoy the various 'case studies' that pepper the book although for readers new to the Art of War these may very well help them apply the text to their lives faster.

I got a new Sun Tzu study technique:

  1. Read the text aloud,

  2. Consider the text and pause,

  3. Read the text aloud again.

I shall not attempt to summarise this book here as I will certainly re-read this book a few more times and learn more.

A very worthwhile book to add to your Sun Tzu collection.
